Tuesday, November 3, 2020 Voting Centers open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This election will be conducted by Los Angeles County, who will print and mail the sample ballots, determine polling centers and precinct officers, process absentee ballot applications, and conduct the tabulation (canvass) of the votes. In compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order relating to COVID-19, all registered voters in the November 3, 2020 Rancho Palos Verdes Election will be mailed a Vote by Mail ballot. The Registrar Recorder’s office will provide safe and secure Vote Centers (in a reduced number) that follow all of the public health and safety guidelines, such as: social distancing of 6 feet; Election Workers wearing protective gloves and masks; wiping down surfaces and Ballot Marking devices after every voter; and, limiting the number of voters in the voting area at one time.


Two (2) Members of the City Council; for a full term of four (4) years; term expiring November 2024.


All candidates must be a United States citizen 18 years of age or older and, a registered voter residing in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes on or before the day of an election. 

Candidates shall not have served two consecutive terms as a Member of the City Council without a break in service of at least six months after the end of that person’s last term of office. (RPVMC §2.04.060(c)).

In addition, a candidate shall not have been convicted of a felony involving accepting or giving, or offering to give, any bribe, the embezzlement of public money, extortion or theft of public money, perjury, or conspiracy to commit any of those crimes. (Elections Code §20).

Closes: Friday, August 7, 2020, at 4:30 pm, unless an incumbent does not file, then the period will be extended to Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at 5:00 pm.

There is no cost to issue nomination papers or receive a Candidate’s Handbook, which is provided free to all persons considering becoming a candidate.

Those candidates that choose to have a candidate statement printed in the sample ballot pay for the printing of that statement, which is estimated to be $800, and is due upon submission of the statement. Please make your check payable to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes.


The Political Reform Act requires candidates and committees to file campaign statements by specified deadlines disclosing contributions received and expenditures made. These documents are public and may be audited by the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) to ensure that voters are fully informed and improper practices prohibited. It is the responsibility of candidates and committees to understand the rules regulating their campaigns in California.

Failure to comply with these filing forms and deadlines can result in prosecution and fines of up to $5,000 per violation.

City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. (closed sessions starts at 6:00 p.m.). Special or adjourned City Council meetings may be held as needed.


Members of the City Council will each be compensated for their services in the sum of $400 per month. Members of the City Council may also receive reimbursement for actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of official duties on behalf of the city.


The Mayor is appointed every 12 months on a rotational basis by the City Council.


Rancho Palos Verdes has an estimated 29,346 registered voters as of May 2020.
