Public Health Unveils Compliance Plan to Enforce Health Officer OrdersAs health inspectors continue to conduct visits to ensure infection control measures are in place in businesses across the County, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has created a tiered compliance and enforcement plan that will include citations and fines for businesses that continue to violate Health Officer Orders.
Since March, Public Health received a total of 17,808 Health Officer Order complaints and investigated more than 17,000 restaurants, more than 3,500 grocery stores, more than 600 pools, and more than 3,000 other businesses.
Twenty-six restaurants, one grocery store, one pool and 67 other businesses were shut down for Health Officer Order violations. Most of the businesses under investigation either came into compliance or were working to come into compliance and that's why they were not closed.
Compliance with the Health Officer Orders is paramount for the long-term reopening of many economic sectors while ensuring the public health and safety of residents, which includes consumers and those who make up the workforce of these sectors.
Beginning at the end of August, fines will be issued to businesses that are non-compliant that can range from $100 for the first offense to $500 and a 30-day permit suspension for multiple offenses. This includes businesses licensed and permitted by the department and those that are not.

COVID-19 Q&A with Dr. William KimDr. William Kim has been a physician in the South Bay for 35 years and serves as Chief Medical Advisor for the Beach Cities Health District (BCHD). Last week, BCHD staff asked him a few questions about COVID-19:
Q: My friend just tested positive for COVID-19. What should I do now?
Dr. Kim: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 should quarantine themselves for 14 days.
If you begin to experience fever, shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell or other symptoms of COVID-19, keep track of the days. Some private practitioners are only testing patients who have been symptomatic for five days or more. This is particularly important for people aged 65 or older and those with underlying health conditions...

COVID-19 Care TipCOVID-19 can spread easily when you’re in close contact with someone who is sick. If you’re caring for a family member with COVID-19, public health officials advise you to not share dishes, plates, eating utensils, towels, or bedding with them. Try to also keep at least 6 feet of distance between yourself and sick family members.

Governor Newsom Announces Enhanced State Stockpile, Purchase of 420 Million New Protective MasksTaking aggressive action to boost California’s long-term supply of life-saving personal protective equipment both now and into the fall months, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced new actions to strengthen the state’s response to COVID-19.
Further building a stable stockpile so that health care and essential workers in California do not face the same supply shortages that characterized the early stages of the pandemic, Governor Newsom has directed the Department of Public Health and Office of Emergency Services to further increase the state’s strategic stockpile to 100 million N-95 respirators and 200 million surgical masks by early fall in order to account for the potential need given the recent rise in COVID-19 cases.

Upcoming Local Blood Drive Blood donations have decreased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthy, eligible donors are urged to come out and give to ensure there’s lifesaving blood on the shelves for those who need it.
The American Red Cross is holding a blood drive on Tuesday, August 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pacific Unitarian Universalist Church, 5621 Montemalaga Drive in Rancho Palos Verdes. Reserve a time online at redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code: PACIFICUNITARIANCHURCH.
Visit redcrossblood.org/rapidpass to complete the pre-donation paperwork.
The Red Cross has implemented additional precautions to ensure the safety of its donors and staff. There is no evidence that the novel coronavirus can be transmissible by blood transfusion, and there have been no reported cases worldwide of transmissions for any respiratory virus, including the novel coronavirus.
For a limited time, the American Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. Help save lives and get insight into whether you may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus.
