Travel Advisory

Public Health Officials Advise Against Holiday Travel to Prevent Another Surge as Additional Variant Cases Confirmed

The L.A. County Department of Public Health has confirmed five additional cases of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7. (U.K. variant), totaling eight cases in L.A. County. The B.1.1.7 variant is more easily transmissible, and verification of the variant in L.A. County means residents and businesses must be extremely diligent adhering to all public health safety measures, including wearing face coverings, distancing from others, and handwashing; these measures protect against transmission of the virus and known variants.

Despite recent decreases in the current COVID-19 surge of cases and hospitalizations, COVID-19 transmission remains widespread here in L.A. County and in many states and countries.

Travel increases the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. Additionally, the risk may be greater with the prevalence of the more easily transmissible B.1.1.7 variant.

With the upcoming Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, and Presidents Day, Public Health advises against non-essential travel and gatherings with people not from your household. COVID-19 surged after Thanksgiving and Christmas travel in November and December. The more people travel, the more interactions they have with individuals outside of their household, the greater the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19.

Shared transportation, including travel by air, bus, or rail, can not only put travelers at risk but also all members of the community if infected travelers spread COVID-19 to others after returning to L.A. County.

A travel advisory remains in effect for L.A. County. Anyone who is arriving to L.A. County must self-quarantine for 10 days; please remain at your home or lodging for the 10 days and avoid contact with others. If you must travel, please plan ahead. Know how widespread COVID-19 is in the area you must travel to. It is critical to not travel if you are sick. Residents should stay home if they are experiencing symptoms of illness, have not finished their isolation period after testing positive for COVID-19, or have not finished their quarantine period after being exposed or likely to have been exposed to someone who is positive for COVID-19. More guidance and information regarding the travel advisory can be found at www.publichealth.lacounty.gov.

Vaccine

L.A. County Working to Expand Vaccination Eligibility in Coming Weeks

Currently, vaccinations in L.A. County are open to healthcare workers, staff and residents at long-term care facilities, and people ages 65 and older. Prioritization of groups to be vaccinated happens at the federal level, and then these recommendations are reviewed and finalized at the state level. Counties are asked to implement the state’s prioritized tiering. On January 25, Governor Newsom announced three additional categories of frontline workers who should be vaccinated as part of Phase 1B Tier 1: education and childcare workers, food and agriculture workers, and emergency services workers.

With very limited vaccine supply and uncertainty on timing for increased production, a realistic and carefully developed plan for expanding vaccination availability to these additional sectors is being developed. The L.A. County Department of Public Health plans to start vaccinations for workers in these sectors in two to three weeks.

Public Health estimates more than 547,000 people are working in the food and agriculture sector and will be eligible for the vaccine, 668,000 people in the childcare and education sector, and 154,000 law enforcement and emergency responders in the county.

Based on anticipated allocations over the next month, Public Health hopes to receive, on average, 200,000 doses a week. If on average, we need to use 100,000 of these vaccines for second doses, that leaves 100,000 doses a week to distribute among the remaining 2.4 million individuals that will be eligible to be vaccinated. So for now, it will take time to reach everyone.

The state announced that in the next several weeks the vaccination effort statewide will be coordinated by a third-party administrator, Blue Shield of California. During and after this transition, Public Health’s website, VaccinateLACounty.com, will remain a portal for the latest information about COVID-19 and the vaccine and link people to the statewide appointment registration system.

CDC Mask Wearing Guide

Improve How Your Mask Protects You

A new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights how improving the fit of your mask can help slow the spread of COVID-19. In lab tests with dummies, exposure to potentially infectious aerosols decreased by about 95% when they both wore tightly fitted masks. Wearing a mask that fits tightly to your face can help limit spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. With the emergence of new variants, wearing a mask is more important than ever. Letter on Prioritizing Vaccinations for Teachers

On February 10, City staff sent a letter on behalf of the Mayor and City Council to Governor Newsom, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors and Department of Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer requesting that teachers continue to be prioritized for vaccinations in Tier 1B or sooner. The letter highlighted concerns raised by the American Academy of Pediatrics about the impacts of remote learning on youths and noted that the vaccination of teachers is an essential step to safely returning to in-person instruction. Read the letter at rpvca.gov.

Myth vs. Fact

COVID-19 Vaccine Myths vs Facts

The L.A. County Department of Public Health reminds the public that while you may have heard different things about the COVID-19 vaccine on social media or through friends and family, it is important to know the facts.

Myth #6: The vaccine contains a microchip that can be used to track my movements.

The Facts: The vaccine does not contain any kind of tracking device whatsoever.

  • This story seems to have spread on the internet based on a Facebook post that said Bill Gates was planning to use a microchip to identify people who have been tested for COVID-19. In fact, Mr. Gates had commented on a research study that had nothing to do with COVID-19 and nothing to do with anything being implanted. The study was about a method to be sure who has gotten vaccinated in countries that have high death rates from vaccine preventable diseases and poor health data systems. Like the story about autism, this is a story that is hard to stop even after it has been debunked over and over.

COVID-19 Vaccine FAQs: What is herd immunity?

Herd immunity is when enough of a population has built up immunity – from either previous infection or vaccination – to a virus that it can no longer easily spread. As a result, everyone within the community is protected even if some people don’t have any protection themselves. The percentage of people who need to have protection in order to achieve herd immunity varies by disease. Experts do not know what percentage of people would need to get vaccinated to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19.

CDC: Coping with Stress, Tips for Managing Stress and Anxiety

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. Many of us are facing challenges that can be stressful, overwhelming, and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Public health actions, such as social distancing, are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but they can make us feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety. Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will make you, the people you care about, and those around you become more resilient.

Stress can cause the following:

  • Feelings of fear, anger, sadness, worry, numbness, or frustration
  • Changes in appetite, energy, desires, and interests
  • Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
  • Difficulty sleeping or nightmares
  • Physical reactions, such as headaches, body pains, stomach problems, and skin rashes
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Worsening of mental health conditions
  • Increased use of tobacco, alcohol, and other substances
It is natural to feel stress, anxiety, grief, and worry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Below are ways that you can help yourself, others, and your community manage stress.

Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress
  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media. It’s good to be informed, but hearing about the pandemic constantly can be upsetting. Consider limiting news to just a couple times a day and disconnecting from phone, tv, and computer screens for a while.
  • Take care of your body.
  • Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.
  • Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol, tobacco, and substance use.
  • Continue with routine preventive measures (such as vaccinations, cancer screenings, etc.) as recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • Get vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine when available.
  • Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
  • Connect with others.
  • Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
  • Connect with your community- or faith-based organizations. While social distancing measures are in place, try connecting online, through social media, or by phone or mail.
