ICYMI: L.A. County Schools Will Not Reopen for In-Person Learning While on State's Monitoring ListIn case you missed it, L.A. County issued a new Health Officer Order to adhere to the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) directive that schools in 32 counties on the state’s monitoring list, including L.A. County, cannot resume in-person learning next month.
The state order allows superintendents to submit school district waiver requests to re-open elementary schools for approval by the local health officer only after review of local epidemiological data and intervention strategies, and in consultation with CDPH.
In order for schools to re-open their campuses, L.A. County will have to remain off the monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. At this time, L.A. County is on the monitoring list because it has a positivity rate of 9% and case rate of 307 positive cases per 100,000 residents. L.A. County's reopening protocols will be modified to reflect the state’s directives. Once available, you can locate reopening protocols at publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus

PVPUSD UpdateFollowing Governor Newsom’s announcement on schools, over the weekend, Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss shared an update on the district’s reopening plans.
Dr. Cherniss will present details of the district’s Distance Learning Academy and the in-person Hybrid School Program during the Board of Education meeting this Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. The Distance Learning Academy is designed for families and students with the intention to learn remotely for the entire school year, and will require a minimum of a one semester commitment. The Hybrid School Program, while designed for 50% in person instruction and 50% remote learning, will begin the year in a 100% remote learning environment until PVPUSD has approval to return to campus. Parents will be given a handbook detailing the programs and will be asked to select the program that best meets the needs of their family. PVPUSD also plans to host another virtual town hall meeting for parents on Monday, July 27.
For more information on how to watch the live stream of Wednesday’s meeting or participate in public comment, visit pvpusd.net.

Public Health Officials Monitor Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in ChildrenAs COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations increase, the L.A. County Department of Public Health (Public Health) continues to monitor for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) that is affecting a number of children under 21 years of age across the country who may have been exposed to COVID-19 or have COVID-19.
To date, Public Health has identified 15 cases of MIS-C in L.A. County with a median age of 8 years, 7 months old. Forty percent of these cases were between ages of 0 and 5 years old, 40% were between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, and 20% were between the ages of 13 and 20 years old. The majority of cases (73%) were Latino/Latinx. No reported cases have died. MIS-C is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.
Public Health is advising physicians to consider for MIS-C in patient children under 21 years old who present with the clinical presentation and to notify the department immediately of any cases.
